Privacy Policy
The short version
- We collect what Poppie needs to work: your Apple sign-in details, the titles and lists you save, and the links you share with us.
- We never sell your data, show you ads, or track you across other apps and websites.
- When you share a post, our servers read its public content (caption, spoken captions, cover and photos) and use an AI service to work out which movie or show it is.
- Your contacts never leave your phone.
- Apple handles all payments. We never see your card details.
- You can delete your account and data at any time, right in the app (Settings → Privacy → Delete my account).
1. Who we are
This policy explains how Poppie ("Poppie," "we," "us") handles information when you use the Poppie iPhone app, its share extension, and getpoppie.com (together, the "Service"). By using the Service you agree to this policy and our Terms of Service.
2. What we collect
Information you give us
- Account details. You sign in with Apple. Apple gives us your name (if you choose to share it), an email address (which may be an Apple "Hide My Email" relay address), and an anonymous Apple user ID. We store these with our database provider to run your account.
- Your library. The movies and shows you save, plus whether you've watched them, your star ratings, and the post each title came from (its link, the creator's public handle, and its cover image link).
- Lists. Lists you create or join, their names, who's in them, the titles added, and who added each one.
- Preferences. The streaming services you tell us you have, and your notification settings.
- Searches. Titles you type into search.
- Messages to us. If you email us or send feedback, we receive your email address and whatever you write.
Information collected automatically
- Subscription status. If you subscribe to Poppie Unlimited, the app and Apple send us Apple's signed record of your subscription (which plan, its transaction ID, and when it renews, expires or was refunded), so we know which features you have. We never receive your payment details.
- Push notification token. If you allow notifications, we store a token that lets us send them to your device.
- Request and log data. Like nearly every online service, our hosting provider records technical details when the app or website talks to our servers, such as IP address, time, the address requested (which can include a shared link or search term), and device or browser type. We use these only to run, secure, and fix the Service.
Information that stays on your phone
- Contacts. If you choose to invite friends from your contacts, Poppie reads names and phone numbers on your device to show them to you. Invites are sent by you from your own Messages app. Contacts are never uploaded to us or anyone else.
- App data on the device. Poppie keeps a copy of your library, lists and settings on your phone, along with a few app-only details (like your free-find count, recently found links, and the profile name you set in the app).
What we don't collect
We don't use advertising identifiers, analytics or ad SDKs, or tracking across other companies' apps and websites. We don't collect your precise location, photos (other than public post images, see section 3), or payment card details.
3. Links you share
Finding titles is the heart of Poppie, so here's exactly what happens when you share or paste a link from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube or another site:
- Your phone sends the link (and any text shared with it) to our servers.
- Our servers fetch the post's publicly available content: its caption, the creator's handle, its cover image, the photos in an Instagram gallery post, and TikTok's automatic captions of what's said in the video. We can only read posts that anyone could see without logging in.
- We send that content (text and images, but not your name, email or account details) to our AI provider, which tells us which movies or shows the post is about. We then look those up in a movie and TV database.
- We send the results back to your phone. If you save a title, we keep the post's link, creator handle and cover image link with it, so you can find the post again.
Our servers don't store the post's caption, transcript or images after a find. Under our AI provider's commercial terms, this content isn't used to train its models.
4. How we use information
- To run the Service: identify titles, show where they stream, keep your library and lists in sync across devices, and let you share lists.
- To send notifications you've turned on, such as when a title you saved starts streaming on one of your services.
- To answer your questions and feedback.
- To keep the Service secure, prevent abuse, and fix problems.
- To improve the Service (for example, figuring out why a find failed).
- To comply with the law and enforce our Terms.
We do not sell your personal information, use it for targeted advertising, or share it with data brokers.
5. Who we share it with
We share information only with service providers that help us run Poppie, who may use it only to provide their services to us:
| Provider | What they do | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Accounts and database | Account details, library, lists, preferences, push tokens |
| Vercel | Hosting for our servers and website | Requests to our servers, including shared links and searches, and log data |
| Anthropic | AI that identifies titles | Public post captions, spoken captions, cover and gallery images, and search text that didn't match |
| TMDB (The Movie Database) | Movie and TV information, posters, trailers, streaming data (provided by JustWatch) | Title names and search terms; your device loads poster images directly from TMDB |
| Expo and Apple | Delivering push notifications | Your push token and the notification's contents |
| Apple | Sign in with Apple, in-app purchases, App Store ratings | What Apple's own services need, under Apple's privacy policy |
| Meta (Instagram), TikTok, YouTube | Reading public posts you share | The post link you shared, requested by our servers (not your device) |
We may also share information: (a) if required by law, subpoena or legal process; (b) to protect the rights, safety or property of Poppie, our users or others; (c) with your consent; and (d) as part of a merger, acquisition, financing or sale of all or part of our business, in which case this policy will continue to apply to your information.
6. What other people can see
- List members can see the list's name, the other members' names, every title on the list, who added it, and the details saved with that title when it was added (such as its rating, watched status and the post it came from).
- Anyone with a list's invite link can see the list's name and its members' names before joining. Only share invite links with people you trust.
- Matches. Members can see which titles on a list everyone has saved.
Your personal library is private to you.
7. Third-party content and links
Some content in Poppie loads directly from other companies, who receive your device's IP address and may set their own cookies under their own policies:
- Trailers play through YouTube's embedded player, which is covered by Google's privacy policy.
- Posters and artwork load from TMDB.
- Post cover images load from Instagram's or TikTok's servers.
Buttons that open a streaming service, the original post, or another website take you to that service, which handles your information under its own policy.
8. How long we keep information
- Account, library and lists: until you delete them or your account. When you delete your account, we erase your account, profile, library, push tokens and the titles you added to shared lists. Shared lists you started are handed to another member so they keep working; lists with no one else in them are deleted.
- Push tokens: until you sign out, turn off notifications, or the token stops working.
- Server and log data: for a limited period set by our hosting providers, generally no more than 30 days, unless needed to investigate abuse or comply with the law.
- Emails to us: as long as needed to help you and keep a record of our conversation.
- On your phone: until you delete it in the app or delete the app.
9. Your choices and rights
- Edit or delete titles and lists anytime in the app. Removing a title from your library deletes it from our servers too.
- Delete your account anytime in the app: Settings → Privacy → Delete my account. This takes effect right away and also revokes Poppie's access to your Sign in with Apple. Can't get into the app? Email help@getpoppie.com and we'll do it within 30 days. Copies in our providers' backups and logs expire on their normal schedule, and we may keep limited information where the law requires it.
- Delete data on your phone only in Settings → Privacy.
- Notifications: turn them off in the app or in your iPhone's Settings.
- Contacts: turn off Poppie's access in your iPhone's Settings at any time.
- Sign in with Apple: you can stop using Apple sign-in with Poppie from your Apple ID settings.
- Access or copy your data: ask us at help@getpoppie.com. You can also export the copy on your phone in Settings → Privacy.
10. US state privacy rights
Depending on where you live (including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon and other states with privacy laws), you may have the right to: know what personal information we collect and how we use it; access it; correct it; delete it; get a copy in a portable format; and opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information, targeted advertising, and certain profiling.
We don't sell or share personal information as those laws define it, and we don't use it for targeted advertising or profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects. In the last 12 months, the categories of personal information we've collected are the ones described in section 2 (identifiers, account details, your saved content and preferences, and internet activity with our Service). We collected them from you, your device, and the public posts you share, for the purposes in section 4, and disclosed them only to the service providers in section 5. We don't collect sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about you.
To use your rights, email help@getpoppie.com. We'll verify your request by matching it to your account, and we'll respond within the time the law requires (usually 45 days). You may use an authorized agent, and we may ask the agent for proof of authorization. If we deny your request, you can appeal by replying to our answer; if you're still not satisfied, you may contact your state attorney general. We won't treat you differently for using your rights.
11. If you're outside the US
Poppie is designed for the US, and our servers and providers are located in the United States. If you use Poppie from elsewhere, your information will be processed in the US, where privacy laws may differ from yours. If laws such as the GDPR or UK GDPR apply to you, we process your information to provide the Service you asked for (contract), for our legitimate interests in running and securing it, to comply with law, or with your consent (for example, notifications). You may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to processing, to data portability, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Contact us to use them.
12. Children
Poppie isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us information, email help@getpoppie.com and we'll delete it.
13. Security
We protect your information with measures like encryption in transit, access controls so each person can only read their own library and the lists they belong to, and limited access by our team. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security. If we learn of a breach affecting your information, we'll notify you as the law requires.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Poppie changes. We'll post the new version here with a new "Last updated" date, and if a change is significant, we'll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
